Bird feeder

What do you need.

  • Elvea passata or pulp bottle
  • 1 of 2 old saucers
  • 1 to 2 corks
  • a utility knife or wire cutters (or a hammer and a thick nail)
  • iron or binding wire
  • Contact cement
  • Dremel diamond drill bit (ø 5-10 mm)

How do I get started?

  • 1
Rinse the bottle and let it dry thoroughly.
  • 2
Get the saucers. Flip one saucer over (curved side facing up) and drill a hole in the center with a dremel or a fine diamond drill bit. Ask an adult for help if needed.
  • 3
Unscrew the cap of the bottle. Cut or snip an opening in it where the birdseed can flow easily. You can also use a hammer and a thick nail to punch several small holes.
  • 4
Cut 3 equal pieces from the corks. Glue them in the center of the other dish. Tip: Use the bottle cap to determine the correct distance between the corks.
  • 5
Glue the cap of the bottle onto the corks so that you can still screw the bottle in and out.
  • 6
Cut 50 cm of iron wire and thread it through the hole you drilled in the first saucer. Secure the bottom part of the wire around the bottle. On the other side, make a sturdy loop to hang the house later.
  • 7
Glue the dish to the bottom of the bottle (with the wire in between). Press down well or place a heavy book on your construction for a few minutes to ensure the glue adheres properly. Let it dry for a few minutes.
  • 8
Fill the bottle with birdseed, peanuts, mealworms, or another tasty bird snack and give your bird feeder a nice spot in your garden or on your patio.
